At the Parmly Hearing Institute we have developed a multimedia classroom (seating about 16 students) which includes four Pentium computers linked to the Institute networks via a FM remote network system. Thus, any research activity taking place in any laboratory or research facility can be broadcast to the classroom. These classroom computers can also be brought directly to any laboratory or facility. This includes the ability to display the models and simulations used in our various labs. We have developed a set of libraries in MATLAB that allow students to develop their own interfaces with the various labs and computer models, so that they can generate sounds or visual images as an aid in better understanding hearing. The classroom also has video and audio equipment for displaying information from CD-ROMS, video and audio tapes, CDs, laser disks, digital tapes, and via various computer systems including complete access to the internet. We are anxious to begin some projects developing multimedia packages for educational purposes related to hearing.
