Models and simulations of the nervous system or of systems that might perform like a
nervous system, often done by computers, can be powerful tools for understanding how a
complex system works. These models, simulations, and data bases allow us to try out
different ideas about behavior (see Behavioral
and Psychophysical Research) and physiology (see Physiological
and Anatomical Research)in ways that would be difficult or even impossible if we had
to depend on using only animals. By developing models we can test our ideas about how a
system might operate. If the model produces the same output as a real biological system,
then the assumptions we used to build the model might actually have some validity
concerning how the biological system functions. Modeling, simulations, and data bases are
used and developed at Parmly in several areas:
Simulations(Auditory Virtual Space)
Neural Modeling (Auditory Image Model)
Models of Auditory Processing by Fish
Modeling Flow Patterns and Neural Excitation Patterns along the Lateral Line System
